All organizations should consider implementing a Workplace Violence Threat Assessment process and a Threat Assessment Team (TAT). Beyond just focusing on warning signs or threats, a threat assessment provides a comprehensive view of evolving, relevant, and related behaviors of concern. Typically, HR handles issues related to discipline or termination, organizational policies and procedures, benefits, and HR-related legal matters in collaboration with legal counsel. HR may also be aware of problematic employee behavior, domestic issues, or other concerns involving employees or significant others. Senior managers can assist by streamlining certain processes, making strategic decisions, allocating funds to hire additional experts, or approving severance or other benefits. Unfortunately, workplace violence can occur in organizations, campuses, and facilities anywhere, leading to unspeakable fear, trauma, injury, or death. It is everyone's responsibility to help stop an incident before it happens!
